Tay's Tips- Week 3: Housing Males & Females

Questions I often get asked are, “can male frogs live with female frogs?” and “Will they have babies?”

To answer it briefly, yes (depending on species) and no.

A lot goes into making froglets! Female frogs are very smart, males will often try to begin amplexus with a tight hug but the ladies have a way to ensure the best life for their eggs. In captivity for females to release eggs, they must be in a rain chamber.

What’s a rain chamber you ask? It’s a special enclosure designed with enough water for the eggs to be safely released, the perfect humidity, a specific temperature range, and scheduled rainfalls for getting in the mood! In the wild frog's mate during the rainy seasons, this not only tells them it’s time to “do the do” but also induces the egg-laying process in females. Wild frogs have a natural timer for when it’s baby time but in captivity (especially for WTFs since their tanks are low humidity) it’s up to us to tell our frogs if and when it’s the time!

So unless you’ve got a tank perfect enough for mating, you shouldn’t have any issues with males and females together. I’m sure there have been very rare situations where people found eggs in their water bowl but this really shouldn’t happen with WTFs. If it does, your humidity is WAAAAY off! I’m not sure if this applies to all frog species but for whites specifically, they should not have any issues like babies. No matter how hard the boys may try

I highly recommend you check out Josh‘s Frogs blog post about rain chambers and frog breeding here if you’d like to read more:
