Hi everyone!! On this weekends edition of Tay’s Tips I wanted to talk about constipation and ways to soothe a frogs tummy troubles.

Just like humans, frogs can experience constipation, they can also experience something known as impaction. The main difference being constipation is a natural occurrence that can happen with certain foods whereas impaction happens when a frog ingests something it’s not suppose to. Think mosses, rocks, and paper towels for some examples. Today I’ll be focusing on constipation to keep things simple. If your frog does eat anything it’s not supposed to and is having trouble passing it, this remedy may work but it’s always best to contact a vet in those cases.

Honey, no matter what brand has antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-allergen properties. It’s most often used as a natural laxative for frogs. When your frog hasn’t pooped in over a week a honey soak may help loosen up whatever is causing them digestive troubles. A honey soak is super simple, all you need is slightly warmed dechlorinated water and honey! Any brand will do but it’s best if you use organic or raw honey if you can. Either way, none will cause negative effects. Add a few drops of honey into the water and give it a mix. Add your frog and allow them to soak for 10 to 20 minutes. Another thing that can help with the process is gently massaging their tummy down towards the bum. The frog may go to the bathroom in the soak or a little bit afterward. It’s good to monitor them after the soak to make sure they go. You can do this every day for a week if they won’t go. After a week it is important to contact a vet especially if the frog is refusing food. You shouldn’t feed them large amounts during this time period since that can make things worse.

Honey soaks should not be done any time other than when a frog is sick. While it won’t harm them giving frogs excess sugars when they don’t need it can cause issues in the long run.

At-home treatments are not replacements for vet care, always contact a vet or long-time frog veterans when you notice something is off about your frog!
